Come check out the new line of type 1 diabetes (T1D) products. My hope is that these will help spread awareness about type 1 diabetes. Maybe by opening up conversations about T1D when others see you wearing them.

Type 1 has affected my family and I know first hand what these warriors go through. Awareness desperately needs to be spread and a cure found. A portion of the sale from these items will be donated to type 1 diabetes support and research in hopes of finding a cure one day soon.

Type 1 Diabetes Awareness Necklace

Hello, friends, new item in the shop! It's an awareness necklace for type 1 diabetes. $10 from every one sold will be donated to a type 1 organization of our choice.

The plan is to add other type 1 items and donate a portion from each of them as well in the future. So keep checking back for that.

Many of these organizations are working hard to find a cure, and many help people living with type 1 until there is a cure. They rely on donations to help fund diabetic alert dogs, pay for needed medical supplies and medications, to educate, to support newly diagnosed (because this can be a very scary time). They pay for diabetes camp for kids whose families can't afford the tuition and so much more!

This disease is so misunderstood and greatly confused and lumped with type 2 diabetes. They are NOT the same! It honestly is a whole different monster and in my opinion, it should have an entirely different name. Type 1 is a life long struggle with no breaks or vacations ever. It's a difficult life that nobody should have to live and it desperately needs a cure. If the whole world understood first hand the struggle of a type 1, I believe there would be a cure already. You don't know it until you live it.

Organizations we like:
City of Hope - Wanek Family Project to Cure Type 1 Diabetes
T1D Mod Squad

What Courage Looks Like

Exactly one year ago today this kid was diagnosed with a life-changing chronic illness. Today is his one year anniversary or what they call it in the type 1 diabetes world, his diaversary.

At first, I thought why on earth would anyone choose to celebrate this horrible horrible day? Why would you want to remember it at all? Then I realized something.

We are NOT celebrating having type 1 or him being in the ICU or hospital that dreadful week. We are NOT celebrating the uninvited or unwelcomed forever-changes. We are NOT celebrating countless finger sticks, needle pokes, blood draws, doctor visits or tears.  We are NOT celebrating the calculation of every single carb put into his body and then countered with insulin. We are NOT celebrating high and low blood sugars or sleepless nights. We are NOT celebrating the tons of misinformation or bad diabetes jokes. Sugar does not cause type 1 diabetes, in fact, sugar can actually save my son's life! Every single one of these things that we are NOT celebrating can GO KICK ROCKS!

What we ARE celebrating is his life being saved that day!
We ARE celebrating a doctor that knew exactly what to check for! We ARE celebrating his bravery!
We ARE celebrating his courage!
We ARE celebrating his strength.
We ARE celebrating him being a fighter every single day and night, 24/7, even though others can't see it or understand it.
We ARE celebrating him doing life on top of doing the hard things of type 1 diabetes.
Until there is a cure we ARE celebrating him being a DIABADASS!

In the type 1 diabetes community, a perfect 100 blood sugar is called a unicorn. Please pray for unicorns! And a cure!

Sometimes Life Just Sucks

Sometimes our struggles seem almost more than we can bear. They definitely test our faith and leave us wondering WHY.

On June 12, 2017 my 10 year old son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. We went to the doctor because he was feeling unwell. From there he was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance where he spent 5 days, two in the pediatric ICU.

NO you can NOT fix type 1 with diet and exercise or weight loss. There is NOTHING you do to get it and there is NOTHING you can do to take it away. You have to count every carb you take in and counter it with insulin. Yes shots! For EVERY meal and snack per your carb ratio and at bedtime. It will NEVER go away! It's a life sentence! It needs a cure!

WHY my child?
WHY can't I take this instead?
WHY any child for that matter?
WHY is there not a cure for this?
WHY does my baby have to cry himself to sleep about this sometimes?
WHY so many pokes to get blood for blood sugar checks?
WHY does he have to get shots just to eat?
WHY does he have to carry an emergency injection in case his blood sugar drops too low and passes out?
WHY does he have to depend on others to know what to do in that situation?
WHY has the joy been sucked from my happy go lucky boy?
WHY does my once happy little character now seem so down all of the time?
WHY does this mama shed more tears now?
WHY do so many know so little about this?
Why why WHY???!!!!!!!!!!
Almost more than we can bear.

I thank God for an appointment within 30 minutes of me calling.
I thank God for a doctor that knew exactly what to check for.
I thank God for local medical care.

If you want to learn more about type 1, PLEASE do. If you have something to share with us about it (we are still learning) AWESOME! If you want to pray for us, YES we will accept every bit of prayer you want to offer up for us.

Trying to find NORMAL

June 12, 2017 - My son started to vomit. Because he had seemed to be off and on under the weather for a couple of weeks I didn't think much of the throwing up. That is until I noticed that he was breathing super heavy while in a relaxed position.

I called the doctor right away because the heavy breathing scared me. Thankfully they had an opening within 30 minutes. I rushed over to to doctor's office. We did have a bit of a wait in the waiting room but when she finally saw us and with just the few questions she asked, she already had a hunch as to what was going on.

"Is he diabetic?" she asked.
No.

"We need to check his blood sugar."
What?

Comes back a few minutes later.

"He's diabetic." She says. "He needs to go to the hospital now."
My heart sank!

It was then an Ambulance ride to the ER. In the ER after running some tests, they confirm what the other doctor had already told us, he is diabetic and he is in Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). He was admitted to the Pediatric ICU (PICU). His blood sugar had to be checked every hour with a finger prick. They needed to bring his blood sugar levels back to the "normal" range with an IV.

So here we were, Mom, Dad and (my baby) our 10 year old newly diagnosed type 1, two days in the PICU, two more days in the regular pediatrics department and Brother at Nana's house. A whole ton of education and information thrown at you and they were ready to send us home. He couldn't wait to get home, we all couldn't!

So with a crash course in Type 1 diabetes, and a bunch of broken spirits, were we really ready to take this on, on our own? No, but we didn't have a choice and we still don't! We are just trying to find normal in this life changing diagnosis.

Is it normal to do finger sticks several times a day?
Is it normal to give shots for every meal and a bedtime?
Is it normal to have to worry about blood sugar level?
Is it normal to have to keep track of your carb intake?
Is it normal to wake up at 2 am to check your blood sugar?
Is it normal to have to email your doctor everyday with your blood sugar readings?

NO!

It's not normal and it's not fair. I feel heartbroken and defeated. He is so strong and so brave and I am so proud of him! He was a CHAMP in the hospital. He hates needles and now he must face them several times every single day. It breaks my heart. I just want things to feel normal again.

Type 1 diabetes is not caused by poor health choices or by being over weight. You do not do anything to get it and you can not do anything to prevent it. Type 1 is an autoimmune disease. It can not be reversed and you can't grow out of it.

It has come to my attention that some may not want to donate to find a cure for type 1 diabetes because the attitude toward this horrible disease is that they/we have brought it upon ourselves and that it can be reversed. This is just not true. It may be the case for type 2 but it is not for type 1, we need an actual cure. I ask you please just be aware Type 1s did not bring this upon themselves and we need a cure,  please pray! Thank you!
