We had a couple of small areas that needed a little sprucing up.

So the boys and I planted.
Nothing like some pretty flowers to make your day! And even better when they are growing in your own yard!

I wish you a Happy Friday! Hope you enjoy your weekend!

Also want to say that I'm taking a little bloggy break to enjoy the rest of the summer and spend more time with my family and friends! Don't worry I'll still be here so you'll see me around. I just won't be making posts as regularly.

But you can bet I'll be making more of these!
And spending more time with these guys!

The best thing to spend on your children is time.

Summer Learning and Other Plans (Printable)

What are  your plans for summer while the kids are out of school? My kiddo finished off his first year of school and I must say he did an excellent job learning!

Part of our summer plans include more learning. I want to keep him sharp for next year. There are reading programs around town but they are big bucks and only last about an hour a day. I figured we could set aside an hour or more a day plus all the other stuff we get in like stories and arts/crafts and such.

I went to a local school supply and picked up one reading workbook, the other books and flash cards we already had or were his unfinished workbooks from school. I also have a little one that we are working on numbers, letters, shapes and colors with.
Because it is summer I want to keep this fun and motivate them, so I went to the dollar store and got "prizes" and put prices on them and placed them in a tub (also from the dollar store).

Each day they earn a Smart Buck for learning! And at the end of the week we open up the Smart Shop and they buy prizes with their Smart Bucks! They can save their bucks for bigger items, use them all or even combine them together, the choice is theirs. They love this, my oldest even does the math to see what he'll have at the end of the week, what he'll have if he combines them with this brother and so on.

I have included the Smart Bucks and Smart Shop sign (made with elements from Just So Scrappy) for you to print and use if you like. Click on the images below to enlarge, click on them again to enlarge even more, save it to your computer and print on 8.5 x 11 card stock.
You can cut the bucks out as squares or punch them out with a jumbo punch.

Our other plans include baking, arts and crafts, local library events going on for the summer, we have a local movie theater offering free kid movies 2 days a week and another theater offering $1 kid movies 2 days a week. Swimming, playing, and of course taking it easy and lounging.

So what plans can you offer to our list?

DIY Ring Toss Game

This is one of the games I made for my son's last birthday party. It started out as a surf theme but ended up being more boardwalk because there were just so many more activities that we were able to incorporate. This game is fairly easy to make.

I choose Tejava tea bottles because I liked the size. Dumped the tea in a pitcher and put in the fridge. Peel labels, wash and dry.

Next I painted the inside of the bottles. This step could be optional but I wanted them to be colorful. I tried several paints and techniques but spray paint seemed to work best!

I had the wooden 7up box (cause I like old/secondhand stuff and just seem to have things like this laying around.) I found the rings at the dollar store in the summertime over with the seasonal pool game/toy isle.

I gave the guests tickets to play games and each one won a prize when they played.

If you are planning any party's this year what theme are you going with? And what are your ideas for that.

Photo Friday - Mom take a picture! - SUNFLOWER

Friday, June 26, 2009

Photo Friday is a collection of my own personal favorite photos.

Several weeks ago my little guy planted these sunflower seeds. He has been watching the greenery grow and grow and grow. I think as the stems got taller than him he kinda forgot that they were still going to get a flower. Then the other day he looked up and noticed this one opening. He ran in the house with excitement shouting "Mom take a picture, take a picture!" and here it is. The first, with several to follow.

And a few days later.

And a few more days.

Don't they just make you happy?

Welcome to summer!

Yesterday was my little guy's last day of school and when he got home this is what he found waiting for him. The last two weeks seem like they have been longer than the whole school year. He has been counting down the days and waiting for this day to arrive (and he was only in preschool). Is this how it is always gonna be? I am new at this whole school/summer vacation thing LOL! I saw this posted on the Tip Junkie blog and thought "What a neat idea!" He enjoyed it! And I enjoyed the look on his face when he saw it.

Now what to do for the entire summer? (Biting nails nervously. Yikes!) Any ideas, tips or activities would be greatly appreciated. Please send them my way via the comments box. Did I say GREATLY appreciated?! Thank you!
