DIY Diaper Cake

Monday, January 10, 2011

Have you seen these diaper cakes? I've seen them online upwards around $80! Yikes! Wanted to make one for a friend and boy am I happy with the way it turned out.
I found this great tutorial here from Susie Stamp a Lot. It leaves you with what you see below. She does go on in another tutorial how she decorated it but I wanted mine a bit different.

I wrapped receiving blankets around each layer. Use clothes pins to hold them in place just long enough to get a ribbon tied around them like below. First fold and iron blankets to the width of the diapers.
The bottom layer was too big around for just one blanket to cover it so I used two like so on the back side.
Next use some paper shred to cover the diapers. You could leave them exposed if you like but I wanted them covered.
I added a rubber duck to the top too! Sooooo cute!
Lastly I placed it in a large cello bag and tied a bow!
I'm kinda in love with it!
It was well received at the shower! One lady even asked if they could place orders for them! Fun! Can you believe there is even baby powder and a bottle on the inside?!!
Have you ever made a diaper cake?

  1. That is by far the cutest diaper cake I have ever seen!! Way to go!! Thanks for posting your awesome idea for us all to copy :)

  2. I love the idea of using receiving blankets to cover the outside! I'll be making one of these for a shower next month and I just may have to borrow that idea. Thanks!

  3. That looks AWESOME. I love the blanket idea, I wish I would have thought of that when I did mine! :)

    It was a mess. ha

  4. This is SO incredibly IRONIC that you post this today! I have been asking my friends if they knew how to make one of these. I am putting together my first baby shower for a friend and I just decided last night that I should make one of these. I was going to look on youtube when I got home from work! Weird! Thanks so much! Now I don't have to search!

  5. I really like your idea of receiving blankets around the outside. I forget what I covered my outside with but I don't think it was blankets. I am with you when I saw the price tags on-line I KNEW I could do it just as well. Yours is so cute....good job.

  6. I've never seen them done with blankets that is a very cute
    idea. . .Super gift!

  7. This is fabulous! I don't know anyone having a baby, but I bookmarked it, so I can find it when I need it. Thank you!

  8. I'm past the age of baby showers but I can see how this would be both beautiful and useful.

  9. Saw this over at Met Monday, its charming! I'd never seen one before, but some friends just had a baby and I can't wait to make one for them!

  10. Thanks for all your great comments! I like the blankets cause they give it a finished look. Just my thoughts though!

  11. I love this! I'll definitely have to make one of these for the next baby shower I go attend. I always have a hard time buying for them because I hate to just throw a few things in a bag! I love that I can be creative with this!

    -Many Smiles

  12. Hi there! Your diaper cake turned out adorable! I'm glad you found my instructions/tutorial did a great job! I'm liking the receiving blanket idea too! Thanks for the mention of me on your blog--that rocks! OH and the baby onesie card--that's my friend, Lauren's tutorial, and my sister, Sara designs digital paper for her company. Small world! Cheering you on, sus

  13. Hi, I saw you in a link up party and your cake looks great. I make diaper cakes locally for the last year and do baby showers. I recently listed some on
    Keep up the good work!

  14. This is a precious variation! I've never seen one where the diapers were "hidden." My little sister made one for me last weekend:

  15. This is so cute! I love how you used the blankets- sheer genius! Thanks for the info.

  16. I love this cake! The receiving blanket treatment is so very elegant. I wish I would have made this style for my sister. Visit my blog to see the one I made!

  17. You did such a good job! I made one for my cousin last year I wish I would have thought to do the blankets. I just used ribbon to tie it together. It was really cute but i really like the blanket idea! I would love for you to link up to my Sew Crafty Saturday party & be sure to check out the two giveaways I have going on! One is an Adventure Date & the other is a $60 gift card to Cowgirl Heaven!

  18. Your diaper cake is adorable! I'm going to try my first one soon as a dear friend is expecting!

If you get a chance, I'd love for you to stop by and share this at the Pretty Packages Party!

  19. How sweet! I'm kinda in love with it too! I think its a fabulous gift! At my baby shower, I didn't receive a SINGLE diaper! But my little girl was the best dressed girl... This would have been my favorite gift!
You should come link this up to my weekly Thursday through Sunday Making It With Allie Link Party! I think it would make a Fabulous addition!

  20. I love this!!! I want a diaper cake really bad now haha!

Please come by and link this to my party!

And i have a great Giveaway going one for ITHINKSEW.COM!

  21. It turned out so cute! I love the duckie at the top. I featured you today at Creations by Kara. :)

  22. That is the cutest diaper cake i have ever seen! I actually just made my first tonight and it was fun! I wish i would have seen your site so I could have made it with cloth. I ended up attaching bottles and butterflies to add to it.

  23. I love your diaper cake but I don't know if you should cover the tiers. Your diaper logs are so uniform! On most diaper cakes, they are kind of sloppy. Maybe a 2 inch wide ribbon for each tier would look better since you could see the diaper logs better!

  24. Absolutely delighted with the unique and original creative ideas posted here. Awesome!

  25. Where can I 0urchase cello bag? Tq!❤
