Time Flies and Cherry Tree

Friday, June 24, 2011

Wow! Where does the time go? Is Friday really almost over?! And was Monday really my last post?! We have been so busy around here with your orders! Thank you! We are also busy planning a Wimpy Kid birthday party! What a challenge that has been.

Remember the post about the Cherry Tree? And the many questions about whether or not this tree is finally gonna get some cherries? Well guess what? IT DID! Only about 5 but they were HUGE, And though they were not super red in color they were ripe and so so very sweet and yummy! I only hope the tree will continue to produce more each year.

Those of you with cherry trees or have some knowledge of them, should this tree continue to produce fruit each year? It was in the yard before we bought the home and have been here about 6 years and this was the first year that we had cherries. We were so excited for our 5 cherries!

The back side was kinda white/yellow, but it still tasted so good. Could it be the variety (that I don't know) that makes it not turn color? Look how HUGE!

Have a great weekend Friends!

Pillow Fight!!!

Hello new hobby! Remember that post? Well geez, who knew it would be so fun?! Okay well I guess several of you knew that.

To me sewing has always been intimidating. And each time I would try to sew my mom was there to help and it was always easier to just let her do it for me. ("Move out my way, let me do that!" lol!) Taking the sewing class at my local fabric shop was very helpful. I learned a ton in that small amount of time and am totally comfortable with my machine. Yay!

I have been doing small projects here and there and I will share them one day but today it's all about the Pillow Fight for a Cause! I made 4 pillow cases (2 to donate and 2 for my boys) using the Little Birdie Secrets tutorial that they guest posted here at Cap Creations just last week.

This project was soooooo fun and easy! I absolutely loved it! Check them out!
Robots!

Pirates!

Now for the Pillow Fight we are encouraged to enter any pillow project as long as we donate a pillowcase. So the pillow that I am entering in the contest is the Sprocket Pillow below. Ohhh soooo pretty!

I found the pattern for this over at Cluck Cluck Sew. Hers are much prettier though. :)

So come on friends! If I can make pillowcases for a great cause anyone can. Really!
Click on over to the Pillow Fight right now for more info and commit to donate a pillow case for children in hospitals!

Who likes giveaways? Well today we have a great one! But then again they are all pretty great aren't they?

Today we are featuring Paper Coterie. I don't know about you but when Paper Coterie had their open house special last month I jumped all over that baby! Like white on rice! For that special they were offering to everyone a $40 store credit! They have the most fantastic photo books and I snatched one up for all the photos I had of my friends graduation. I will be giving this to her on her birthday.

Wow friends! This book is fantastic. Very well made and beautiful. The quality is superb. The papers used are nice and thick and the printing is top notch! I would definitely recommend them to everyone!

The packaging was even lovely and with every first order they give you a pretty orange necklace. See photo below.

The back side of the package was just a lovely as the front that I just couldn't see throwing it in the trash. So out with my trusty jumbo hole puncher.

To make some hang tags for gifts or what ever you use pretty tags for!

Paper Coterie offers tons of stuff! Beautiful cards and stationary from calendars to growth charts for your little one.

Pillowcase Tutorial {Guest Post}

Monday, June 6, 2011

We are so happy to have Mandy here from Little Birdie Secrets! She will be sharing an easy pillow case tutorial. We hope that you can take this tutorial and crank out a couple pillowcases for the wonderful Pillow Fight going on over at Ladybird Ln.  100 Pillowcases to children in hospitals can be achieved with your help! Okay enough from me, here's Mandy!

I'm Mandy from Little Birdie Secrets and I am so excited to be part of the Pillow Fight for a Cause! Every time I take my kids with me to the fabric store they try to convince me to buy more fabric for another pillowcase. And it usually works. The problem is that they're so easy and fun to make! This is a simple pillowcase tutorial that will give you tons of options for the pillowcase you're going to donate to Carlee's cause! Enjoy!

This quick and easy pillowcase makes kids want to go to bed at night! Cotton or flannel fabrics work well. You will need three coordinating fabrics. One for the body of the pillowcase, one for the cuff, and one for the trim that separates them. Whether you buy licensed designs like Cars® or Disney® Princesses, or just a fun fabric to match your child's room, these are sure to be a hit. (My boys are constantly fighting over the Scooby Doo® pillowcase in our house!)

Novelty Pillowcase Tutorial

What you'll need:
1/3 yard of fabric for the pillowcase cuff
1/8 yard of contrasting fabric for the trim
¾ yard of fabric for the main pillowcase body

Okay, let’s get started:

1. First, cut the cuff fabric to measure 11 inches by 42 inches.

2. Cut the trim fabric to measure 2 inches by 42 inches.

3. Cut the main body fabric to measure 27 by 42 inches.

4. Fold the trim fabric in half with the wrong sides together and iron flat.

5. Lay the cuff fabric on the table facing up.

6. Place the trim fabric on the cuff fabric by lining up the raw (cut) edges of the trim with the top edge of the cuff fabric.

7. Place the main body fabric face down on top and line the top edge with the top edge of the cuff and trim.

8. Take the bottom of the main body fabric and slowly roll it up until it is in the middle of the cuff fabric.

9. Take the bottom of the cuff fabric up and around both the body and trim fabric and line the bottom edge with the top edge of the fabric and pin into place. This will form a fabric tube.

10. Sew or serge along the pinned edge.

11. Slowly pull out the rolled main body fabric and turn the cuff right side out.

12. Iron flat.

13. Fold the large piece of fabric you have now in half (so it looks like a pillowcase shape) and sew the two raw edge sides together.

14. Turn inside out.

Sweet dreams!

Mandy thank you soooo much for taking the time to be here today! I told you before but I'm gonna tell you again, I love the fact that even though Little Birdie Secrets is a "BIG" blog you don't hesitate/aren't afraid to use your blog to help out when you can! I appreciate you a ton!

And for more info on the Pillow Fight and how you can help, visit Ladybird Ln.
There will be prizes too!!!

I DARE you to join this Pillow Fight! {Guest Post}

Hi friends! I'm happy to have Carlee here today to share a pretty fantastic thing she's doing over at her blog. So read up and I hope to see MANY of YOU participate in this.

I am so excited to be here at Cap Creations! My favorite piece of jewelry (other than my wedding ring) is a beautiful necklace from Cap Creations that has my three children's name on it with the inscription forever mine! I simply treasure it!

My name is Carlee, and I have a little blog with my sister Alyssa called Ladybird Ln. Today, I am going to talk about a FUN pillow contest, for charity I am having on my blog, Pillow Fight--For a Cause!

Every month on our blog, we feature a charity, service organization, etc... and a project we crafters/bloggers can unite in to help with that cause!  This project was actually inspired by Cathy here at Cap Creations, the very first project I spotlighted was the Bring Brady Home project.  I was amazed at Cathy's generosity, and thought I wanted my blog to help out in some way.  It has been a lot of fun to feature monthly service projects, and find ways we can all help!
This month I am featuring a project very near and dear to my heart. I have a great friend, Malynn, who is 14 years old, and has undergone some tough TOUGH medical stuff recently. She has been in and out of the hospital for the past 6 months. One might expect after all the medical problems she has endured she would be bitter and resolved. But not Malynn, she is amazing in so many ways. Instead of focusing on her issues she wants to help others. Malynn is an incredible seamstress, at the age of 14 she far surpasses my sewing ability!  Just look at one of her latest purses..
Yup, she is amazing!  With her incredible sewing talent, she has made it a goal to donate 100 bright cheerful pillow cases to Primary Children's Medical Center, to brighten up the patients rooms!  When she was in the hospital it was so comforting to have her own pillow.

I decided I wanted to help her out with this great cause.... and what better way than a
PILLOW FIGHT!  It is called Pillow Fight--For a Cause! Essentially this is a pillow contest where you can enter  ANY handmade pillow.  You can enter your homemade ruffly throw pillows, your sweet decorative pillows, your fleecy flower pillows, your bedazzled pillowcases... pretty much anything pillow related, that you have made. THE CLINCHER IS, in order to enter this contest you must donate a pillowcase, one pillowcase per entry! A bright, cheery, fun pillow case, to brighten up the day of someone in need. You can either send it to me, and I will let Malynn donate it to Primary Children's Medical Center (Salt Lake City), or you can donate it to a local hospital, women's shelter, etc. You just have to let me know that you donated one!  You can enter at my blog from June 15-22.

We have some FABULOUS prizes for this contest. HUNDREDS of dollars worth of prizes!  We will have guest judges narrow down the pillow field to ten, and then open it up to voting. The top three pillows will receive some amazing prizes. The winner will receive a $40 gift card to Cap Creations as part of the prize pack.  Additional sponsors for this event include... Kati Cupcake, Cap Creations, Sew Obsessed, Vinylize It, Funky Polkadot Giraffe, Naptime Crafters... And Malynn and I are even going to throw in some prizes. We will also have one random prize for anyone who links up--sound terrific, we think so!  For more information click HERE!

So are you in? I sure hope so!  Are you worried about making a pillowcase?  Don't be, creating a pillow case is simple, fast, and fun. It is a great beginner project, for any age.  This would be a great project to teach your child how to sew! Their are dozens of different ways to make a pillowcase, I shared a tutorial HERE for an easy basic pillowcase!

Here is a little pillowcase inspiration!  These are all homemade pillowcases made by me or given to me by family members!

Please come join the Pillow Fight, on our blog! You can link up your pillow creations
June 15-22!

I would love to donate 100 pillow cases! I can't imagine how hard it would be to have a child in a hospital for long periods of time.  I hope in some small way these pillowcases can be a comfort, and reminder of home.

I am trying to spread the word about this contest.  Please put a button on your blog, or contact me, I would love to come to your place and guest post about it!

Thank you so much Cap Creations for letting me crash your fabulous blog today, and please consider entering this fun contest!!

Anytime Carlee! I think it's great what you are doing! And believe it or not I WILL be making and donating a pillow case myself!!! Can you believe that?!  I, that just took my first sewing class at the beginning of this year! Yup you can count on me for this one! ;) And if I can do this I know ANYONE can.

So I encourage DARE you to participate too! Isn't it worth the smile on the face of a sick child? Let me know in the comments if you will participate. Come back Monday when I will have a very special guest blogger that will be sharing a pillow case tutorial. You won't want to miss it!
